Kibitsu-jinja Shrine
The sanctuary of Prince Kibitsuhiko-no-mikoto, the model for Momotaro.
This is Okayama’s oldest and most revered shrine, the guardian shrine for the ancient Kingdom of Kibi, or modern day Okayama, which is famed as the birthplace of the legend of Momotaro (Japan Heritage) in Japanese culture. Here in the grounds of the shrine, it is possible to hold mainly standing buffet-style receptions, with views across to the main shrine building and worship hall, which are national treasures. The shrine precincts are home to many sights, including a 400m covered corridor, national Important Cultural Properties north and south Zuishinmon Gates, and the Okamaden, which is said to be the resting place of the severed head of an ogre, who was killed by Momotaro.
