Excursion

Experience Okayama’s industry

In the mountains in western Okayama lies Fukiya Furusato Village, which from the mid-19th century through to the early 20th century was a production center for vivid red “Bengara” pigment, used in Japanese crafts such as Kutani ceramics and Wajima lacquerware. It is inscribed as Japanese Heritage as the “Birthplace of ‘Japan Red’ – Bichu Fukuya Town, bengara and copper – ”. Nearby is Bicchu Matsuyama Castle, an Important Cultural Property and one of the 12 castles in Japan that still retains its original keep. Also close by is the magnificent old sake brewery that was established in 1918 and provided the location for the movie Battery (by Atsuko Asano).
